Thousand Lakes Lodge

Nestled within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, this challenging day walk takes you through temperate rainforest and culminates at a waterfall that cascades 130m over the lip of the Great Western Tiers. Following the course of the Meander River the walk takes in a wide range of vegetation types with many flowering understory plants such as Tasmanian Waratah and Leatherwood as well as iconic Tasmanian species of King Billy pine, Celery Top pine & Myrtle. The track is steep and rocky and has an elevation gain of 470m over 5km. There is a hybrid toilet and information board located at the car park. Time: 4.5 - 6 hours return. The Pine Lake track consists of a level boardwalk that winds through the alpine landscape of the Central Plateau. Surrounded by ancient pencil pines and unique alpine flora, the walk is an interesting one suitable for all ages and abilities. The boardwalk enables those unable to walk long distances or people in a wheelchair to easily experience this special part of the Tasmanian Highlands. Time: 30 minutes return. ​Grade 1: ​No bush​walking experience required. Flat even surface with no steps or steep sections. Historic Warners Track ascends from Jackeys Marsh to the Central Plateau via Burnies Creek. The Track passes through a series of different forest types starting with wet eucalypt and dogwood forest and giving way about half way up to rainforest species of myrtle, sassafras and waratah. The creek has carved a fairly deep gorge in places and towards the top forms a series of pools, cascades and small waterfalls. Warners Track was originally forged by Aboriginal people through the use of fire. This managed track allowed for ease of access to the 'Big River' country where people came together from the north, northeast, south and northwest for trade and to gather 'Cider-Gum' sap and ochre. Warners Track holds many artifacts and much history about the Aboriginal clans. Later, in the 1890s the track was used to allow stock access to the plateau. The track was restored in 2009 by Mountain Huts Preservation Society and PWS. Time: 4 hours return. Grade 3: ​Some bushwalking experience recommended.
